ডাউকি তে পৌঁছে গেছি।  তবে এখনো বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে। এখন কাজ হচ্ছে গাড়ি ঠিক করা এবং ডাউকি বাজারে গিয়ে টাকা ভাঙানো। আপাতত চেরাপুঞ্জি যাওয়ার জন্য একটা  গাড়ি লাগবে। আর সেই গাড়ি ডাউকি বাজার দিয়েই যাবে। চেরাপুঞ্জিতে আমার হোটেল বুকিং করা আছে একরাতের জন্য। চেরাপুঞ্জি খুব বড় শহর না তাই হোটেলগুলোও অনেক বড় বড় না। বাংলাদেশের ওয়েবসাইট গুলো থেকে ভালো হোটেল পাওয়া যায় না। তাই মেক মাই ট্রিপ থেকে চেষ্টা করা যেতে পারে। আমি মেক মাই ট্রিপ থেকেই বুকিং করেছি। আর একটা কথা বলে রাখা ভালো চেরাপুঞ্জিতে হোটেল বুকিং এর জন্য পেমেন্ট না করে রাখলে রুম পাওয়া একটু কষ্ট সাধ্য হতে পারে। তাই আমিও পেমেন্ট করে রেখেছি। হোটেল কেমন ছিল সেটা পরে বলছি।

 

এখন গাড়ি খোজার বিষয়টা বলি। ডাউকি ইমিগ্রেশন কমপ্লেক্স এর ঠিক ইমিগ্রেশন থেকে বের হওয়ার পরই  ডান দিকে একটা বিশ্রামের ঘর আছে আর ওখানেই পেয়ে যাবেন গাড়ির ড্রাইভার। আর সুন্দর করে সমস্ত ভাড়ার তালিকা করা আছে। আপনি চাইলে ওখান থেকে এক দিনের ট্রিপের জন্যও গাড়ি নিতে পারেন আবার পুরো ট্রিপের জন্যও গাড়ি নিতে পারেন। আমি যেহেতু ৪ দিন থাকব তাই পুরো ৪ দিনের জন্যই গাড়ি নিয়ে নিলাম। ড্রাইভারের নাম ব্রুকলিন তবে সবাই ব্রুক বলে ডাকে। তার ফোন নম্বরটা দিয়ে দিলাম। +91 89749 65612. হোয়াটসঅ্যাপ আছে বাংলাদেশ থেকেও যোগাযোগ করে যাওয়া যাবে। কিছু সিলেটি ভাষা বলতে পারে আর বাংলা সব বোঝে, তবে ভালো বাংলা বলতে পারে না।

 

যাইহোক ৪ দিনের জন্য ১২,০০০ ভারতীয় রুপিতে গাড়ি ঠিক হল। সকাল থেকে সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত আমার সাথেই থাকবে আর চেরাপুঞ্জি হয়ে সিলং ঘুরে সোনাংপেডাং দেখে আবার ডাউকিতে পৌঁছে দেবে। আমরা চেরাপুঞ্জিতে একরাত আর সিলং এ দুইরাত থকব। শুরু হয়ে গেল আমাদের মেঘালয় ভ্রমন। আমরা প্রথমেই গেলাম ডাউকি বাজার। সেখান থেকে টাকা ভাঙালাম। প্রতি ১০০ টাকায় ৭০ রুপি করে দিল। আমার কাছে ৩২৭০০ এর মত টাকা ছিল।  তবে আসার দিন তামাবিল থেকে সিলেটের হুমায়ন চত্তর পর্যন্ত আসতে ১৭০০ টাকা লাগতে পারে ভেবে ৩১,০০০ টাকা ভাঙালাম। পেলাম ২১৭০০ রুপি।

 

এবার একটা মোবাইল সিমও কিনতে হবে। কোথায় পাওয়া যাবে সিম জিজ্ঞেস করতেই ড্রাইভার বললেন চেরাপুঞ্জিতে গিয়ে কিনতে হবে। আমরা চেরাপুঞ্জি যাওয়ার পথে কিছু স্পট ঘুরে দেখব। তাই দেরি না করে ডাউকি বাজার থেকে রওনা দিয়ে দিলাম। আমরা প্রথমে দেখব উমক্রেম ফলস। ডাউকি বাজার থেকে ৩০/৪০ মিনিট গাড়িতে যাওয়ার পর পেয়ে গেলাম উমক্রেম ফলস। বর্ষাকাল তার উপর গত ৩/৪ দিন ধরে টানা বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে। সুতরাং এখনকার ঝর্ণাগুলো সব পানিতে পরিপূর্ণ।  এত সুন্দর সেই দৃশ্য।  কিছু অপার্থিব সৌন্দর্য উপভোগ করার জন্য আমাদের এবারের যাত্রা। দেখুন উমক্রেম ফলসের একটা ছবি নিচে দিয়ে দিলাম। 

 

প্রায় ২০ মিনিট পর আবার রওনা দিলাম।  এবার যাব বড়হিল ফলস। যেটা আমাদের সিলেটে অনেক দূর থেকে দেখা যায়। সিলেটে যেটাকে বলা হয় পান্থুময়। উমক্রেম ফলস থেকে প্রায় ৪০ মিনিট লাগল বড়হিল ফলস যেতে। বড়হিল ফলস , উমক্রেম ফলসের চেয়ে বড় আর পনিও আরো বেশি উপর থেকে পড়ে। বড়হিল ফলসের একটি ছবি দেওয়া হল।

 

আমরা এখানেও প্রায় ২০ মিনিট মত থেকে আবার রওনা দিলাম। এবার আমরা যাব লিভিং রুট ব্রীজ। লিভিং রুট ব্রীজে যেতে আমাদের সময় লাগল প্রায় ১ ঘন্টা। পার্কিং-এ গাড়ি রেখে আমরা ১০ মিনিটের মত ট্রাকিং করে নিচে নেমে গেলাম লিভিং রুট ব্রীজ দেখার জন্য। পার্কিং-এর জন্য লাগল  ৩০ রুপি আর লিভিং রুট ব্রীজের জন্য লাগল জনপ্রতি ৪০ রুপি। কি সুন্দর নিচে খরস্রোতা নদী বয়ে চলেছে কলকল শব্দে আর উপরে মানুষের তৈরী গাছের শিকড় দিয়ে ব্রিজ। সে এক অন্যরকম অনুভূতি।

 

বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে প্রচন্ডভাবে এবং ওঠার সময় আমাদের বেশ কষ্ট হচ্ছিল আর গলাও শুকিয়ে গিয়েছিল। তাই একটা মাজা ড্রিংকস কিনে নিলাম। কিন্তু এ কি যে দিক দিয়ে নামলাম সে দিক গেল কোথায় খুজে পাচ্ছি না। গ্রামের ভিতর চলে গেলাম। আবার একটু নিচের দিকে নেমে উপর থেকে দেখে নিলাম পার্কিং টা কোন দিকে আবার সে দিকে রওনা হলাম। একটা বলে রাখি মোটামুটি অনেক স্পটেই পাবলিক টইলেট আছে।  সুতরাং প্রকৃতির ডাক নিয়ে কোন চিন্তা করার দরকার নেই। মাত্র ১০ রুপি দিয়ে টইলেট ব্যবহার করতে পারবেন। যাইহোক লিভিং রুট ব্রিজ দেখে ফিরে আসতে আমাদের প্রায় ৪০ মিনিটের মত সময় লেগে গেল। এর মধ্যে পেটে একেবারে ক্ষিদেই ছুচো চলার অবস্থা। 

 

আমরা এরপর মাউলিনং ভিলেজে গেলাম দুপুরের খাবার খেতে। তার আগে আমারা দুইটা রেইনকোট কিনে নিলাম ১,০০০ রুপি দিয়ে সমনে চেন সহ গুলো। এরপর প্রথমে যে হোটেলটা দেখলাম পার্কিং-এর সাথে সেখানেই গেলাম দুপুরের খাবার খেতে।  আমরা ফিস থালি নিলাম ৩ টা আর ১ লিটার পানি নিলাম।  মোট বিল আসল ৭৭০ রুপি। বলে রাখি এখানে পার্কিং চার্জ ১০০ রুপি তবে গ্রামে ঢোকার জন্য কোন এন্ট্রি ফি নেই।

 

যাই হোক খাওয়া শেষে আমরা এশিয়ার সেই বিখ্যাত সবচেয়ে পরিষ্কার গ্রাম দেখতে বের হলাম। প্রচন্ড বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে এর মধ্যেই আমরা গ্রাম ঘুরে দেখছি। গ্রামের মানুষগুলো অনেক সৌখিন। প্রত্যেকটা বাড়িই সাজানো গোছানো। আর অনেক গুলো বাড়িতে হোমস্টে আছে। সুতরাং কেউ রাতে থাকতে চাইলে থাকতে পারবে। একটা গীর্জা দেখলাম সুন্দর পরিপাটি তাতে বুঝলাম এই গ্রামের মানুষ খ্রিস্টান ধর্মেরই হবে। হাটতে হাটতে একটা চা এর দোকান পেলাম। বৃষ্টি, সুন্দর পরিপাটি গ্রাম আর চা দারুন একটা ব্যাপার হয়ে গেল। তবে চা এর দাম অনেক কাপ প্রতি ৪০ রুপি পড়ল।

 

গ্রামের একেবারে শেষের দিকে একটা রাস্তার মোড় পেলাম সেখানে পিচ ঢালা একটু খালি জায়গা, অনেকটা মাঠের মত একটা জায়গা। সেখানে কিছুক্ষণ দাড়ালাম আমরা। কি অদ্ভুত দৃশ্য , একটু পরের মেঘ এসে জায়গাটা ভরে গেল, আমার একটু পরেই মেঘ চলে গেল। অনেকটা সাজেকেও সকালবেলা হেলিপ্যাডে আমি এমন দৃশ্য দেখেছি। যাইহোক এখন ফিরে যাওয়ার পালা। এখন আমরা রওনা দেব চেরাপুঞ্জির উদ্দেশ্যে রাস্তায় একটা ভিউ পয়েন্টে একটু ব্রেক নেব।

 

ঠিক এক/দেড় ঘন্টা পরে আমরা ভিউ পয়েন্টে এসে দাড়ালাম। জনপ্রতি ২০ রুপি দিয়ে টিকিট কেটে একটু উপরে উঠলাম ভালো ভিউ দেখার জন্য। কি সুন্দর মেঘপুঞ্জ খেলা করছে এক পাহাড়ের চূড়া থেকে আর এক পাহাড়ের চূড়ায়। কি সেই অপরূপ দৃশ্য। নেমে এসে রেস্টুরেন্টে ঢুকলাম চা খাওয়ার জন্য। এখানে চা ৩০ রুপি করে নিল। 

চা খেয়ে আবার রওনা দিলাম। আমরা প্রায় সন্ধ্যা ৭ টার দিকে চেরাপুঞ্জি টেক্সিস্ট্যান্ডে পৌঁছে গেলাম। আমাদের হোটেল আগে থেকেই বুকিং দেওয়া ছিল। হোটেলে চেকইন করে নিলাম। আর হোটেল থেকে জানাল রাত ৮ টার মধ্যে সব খাবারের অর্ডার করে দিতে হবে আর ৮.৩০ এর মধ্যে ডাইনিং এ গিয়ে খেতে হবে। পাহাড়ি অঞ্চল তাই সকাল সকাল সব বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। বৃষ্টি কিন্তু একটুও থামেনি তবে মাঝে মাঝে কমে গিয়েছিল। 

 

সন্ধ্যার জন্য ভেজিটেবল পাকোড়া আর পাপড় অর্ডার দিলাম আর রাতের খাবের জন্য ভাত, ডাল, সবজি আর মাছের কালিয়া অর্ডার করলাম। এর পর আমরা গোসল করে নিলাম। গোসল করতে করতে পাকোড়া আর পাপড় চলে এল। সাথে চা খেয়ে সন্ধ্যার নাস্তা শেষ করলাম। পাকোড়াগুলো অনেক মজা ছিল তবে রাতের খাবারের স্বাদ খুবই বাজে ছিল। মাছের কালিয়া চেয়েছিলাম কিন্তু দিয়েছে মাছের ঝোল। সব মিলে ১২০০ রুপির মত বিল আসল। হোটেল এর রিভিউ আলাদা করে দেব। 

 

খেয়ে এসে ব্যাগগুলো খুলে আমরা অবাক হয়ে গেলাম বেশির ভাগ কাপড়ই ভিজে গেছে। আর এই ভেজাটা তামাবিল বর্ডারেই ভিজেছে। এত অব্যবস্থাপনা হতে পারে একটা বর্ডারে কেউ না গেলে বিশ্বাসই করবে না হয়ত। যাইহোক এখন কাপড় শুকানো লাগবে। ঘরে একটা রুম হীটার ছিল এটাই এখন একমাত্র ভরসা। আস্তে আস্তে ভেজা কাপড়গুলো শুকিয়ে নিলাম। তারপর ঘুমিয়ে পড়লাম। পরের দিন আবার অনেক স্পট দেখতে হবে তারপর সিলং চলে যাব ইনশাআল্লাহ।

We have arrived in Dawki. However, it is still raining. The task now is to arrange a car and exchange money at the Dawki market. We will need a car to go to Cherrapunji, and that car will pass through the Dawki market. I have a hotel booking in Cherrapunji for one night. Cherrapunji is not a big town, so the hotels are not very large either. You won't find good hotels on Bangladeshi websites, so you might try MakeMyTrip. I booked my hotel through MakeMyTrip. It is worth noting that getting a room in Cherrapunji without advance payment can be challenging. Therefore, I made the payment in advance. I will tell you later how the hotel was.

Now, let me tell you about arranging a car. Just after exiting the Dawki Immigration Complex, on the right side, there is a rest house where you will find car drivers. They have a nicely arranged fare list. You can rent a car for a day trip or for the entire trip. Since I will be staying for four days, I rented a car for the entire four days. The driver's name is Brooklyn, but everyone calls him Brook. His phone number is +91 89749 65612. You can contact him via WhatsApp even from Bangladesh. He can speak some Sylheti and understands Bengali, but he cannot speak it well.

So, the car was arranged for 12,000 Indian Rupees for four days with a discount of 800 Indian Rupees. He will be with us from morning to evening, traveling through Cherrapunji, Shillong, and Sonangpedang, and then back to Dawki. We will stay one night in Cherrapunji and two nights in Shillong. Thus began our Meghalaya trip. We first went to the Dawki market to exchange money. They gave 70 rupees for every 100 takas. I had around 32,700 takas, but thinking I might need 1,700 takas to get back from Tamabil to Sylhet's Humayun Square, I exchanged 31,000 takas. I received 21,700 rupees.

Now, we need to buy a mobile SIM card. When asked where to get a SIM, the driver said we could buy one in Cherrapunji. We will visit some spots on our way to Cherrapunji. Without delay, we started from the Dawki market. Our first stop was Umkrem Falls. It took about 30-40 minutes by car from the Dawki market. It has been raining continuously for the past 3-4 days, so the waterfalls are full of water. The scenery is so beautiful. We are on this trip to enjoy some ethereal beauty. After about 20 minutes, we set off again, this time to Borhill Falls. It took about 40 minutes to get to Borhill Falls from Umkrem Falls. Borhill Falls is larger and has more water falling from a greater height than Umkrem Falls. Here is a picture of Borhill Falls.

After staying there for about 20 minutes, we set off again for the Living Root Bridge. It took us about an hour to get to the Living Root Bridge. After parking the car, we trekked down for about 10 minutes to see the Living Root Bridge. Parking cost 30 rupees and the entry fee for the bridge was 40 rupees per person. The river flowing below with its gurgling sound and the man-made bridge of tree roots above is a unique experience.

It was raining heavily, and it was quite difficult to climb back up, and we were very thirsty. So, we bought a soft drink. But we couldn't find the way we came down. We ended up inside a village. We went down a bit and looked from above to find the parking lot and then headed that way. One thing to note is that there are public toilets at many spots. So, there is no need to worry about answering nature's call. You can use the toilet for just 10 rupees. It took us about 40 minutes to return from the Living Root Bridge. By this time, we were very hungry.

We then went to Mawlynnong Village for lunch. Before that, we bought two raincoats for 1,000 rupees. We went to the first hotel we saw next to the parking lot for lunch. We ordered three fish thalis and a liter of water. The total bill was 770 rupees. Note that there is a parking charge of 100 rupees, but there is no entry fee for the village.

After finishing our lunch, we set out to visit the famous cleanest village in Asia. It was raining heavily, but we still explored the village. The villagers were very sophisticated. Every house was neatly arranged, and many homes offered homestays, so anyone who wanted to stay overnight could do so. We saw a beautifully maintained church, which made it clear that the villagers were Christians. While walking, we found a tea shop. Taking tea in the rain in such a beautiful village was a wonderful experience, though the tea was quite expensive at 40 rupees per cup.

At the very end of the village, we found a road intersection with a paved, empty space, almost like a field. We stood there for a while, witnessing an amazing scene as clouds filled the area and then moved away. It reminded me of the morning view at the helipad in Sajek. Anyway, it was time to leave, so we set off for Cherrapunji, planning to take a break at a viewpoint along the way.

About an hour and a half later, we arrived at the viewpoint. We bought tickets for 20 rupees each and climbed up to get a better view. The clouds were playing across the peaks of the hills, creating a stunning sight. After descending, we entered a restaurant for tea, which cost 30 rupees per cup. 

We then continued our journey and reached the Cherrapunji taxi stand around 7 PM. Our hotel was pre-booked, so we checked in. The hotel informed us that we needed to order all food by 8 PM and dine by 8:30 PM, as everything in the hilly area closes early. The rain hadn't stopped but had lessened at times.

For the evening, we ordered vegetable pakoras and papads, and for dinner, we ordered rice, lentils, vegetables, and fish kalia. After taking a bath, the pakoras and papads arrived. We had also tea with our evening snacks. The pakoras were delicious, but the dinner was very disappointing; instead of fish kalia, they served fish curry. The total bill was around 1200 rupees. I will review the hotel separately.

When we unpacked our bags, we were shocked to find most of our clothes were wet, having gotten soaked at the Tamabil border. The disorganization at the border was unbelievable unless experienced firsthand. Anyway, we needed to dry our clothes. The room had a heater, which became our only hope. We slowly dried the clothes and then went to sleep. The next day, we had many spots to visit before heading to Shillong, Inshallah.
